The very next day, Feliciano called Lovino while he was at work. The younger brother hadn't been feeling too well that week and he was wondering if Lovino would help watch Marina when Ludwig had late hours like that day. Feliciano was still going to teach but he didn't think he could balance it with Marina at night alone so having Lovino there would help a lot. Lovino agreed but if he was so sick, he thought he really should not be working at all. Feliciano protested regardless and said that the brotherly time would be nice. As much as he wouldn't admit it, Lovino agreed as he really hadn't been by much and he missed Marina.
That night though he still planned on going over to the condo for dinner simply because he didn't want to cook and that's what he did. When he got there, Gilbert answered the door and he scowled.
"Where's Tonio, potato breath?" Lovino asked, not wanting to talk to him.
"Why do you hate me?" Gilbert asked.
Lovino's heart sped up a little. He didn't know why Gilbert

When Antonio got home the next day, he immediately started looking for ideas for tofu recipes. Matthew had come home with him but he was tired and quickly went to take a nap. Gilbert had texted to say he'd be heading over to his brother's for dinner. Francis got home just as Antonio had found himself a recipe and inquired about his vegetarian choices.
"Lovi asked me to make tofu," Antonio asked. "One of his restaurants is trying to add vegetarian options and he wants to try it. I have to come up with something good though. Oh, shoot... I don't know if Mateo likes tofu. I should've asked."
"Can't you ask now?"
"He's taking a nap and I don't want to wake him."
"Oh." Francis tapped his chin. "Well if we bread the tofu like chicken and cook it just right, no one can tell the difference."
Antonio's eyes lit up. "Really? You can do that?"
Francis nodded smiling. "Here, I'll show you."
They spent the next half hour preparing the 'chicken' together and once it was in the oven, they started on

The next morning, Lovino's internal clock woke him up early even though he was still terribly tired. He tried getting back to sleep but he couldn't and eventually he sat up, too tired to go anywhere. He looked around Antonio's mess of a room and took it in, not having paid much attention to it when he crashed the night before. The room was a dump, filled to the brim with useless collectables and an assortment of clothes Antonio rarely wore. The only thing that seemed to be in its rightful place was his guitar which hung in its case on the wall by the door. He remembered back in boarding school, Lovino was the one with the messy room while Antonio's room was clean and pristine: no clutter, no garbage. In fact, if there was a mess, Lovino had made it by accident. The only cleaner room was Gilbert's but his was also overflowing with assorted stuffed animals and heavy metal posters. Perhaps being cut off from his parents, Antonio became a bit of a harder, knowing there was nowhere else to

A few days later, Antonio texted Lovino about Thanksgiving. Apparently, for the first time in the eleven years they were in Toronto, Francis was celebrating Thanksgiving at his place. Lovino figured their new roommate must've had something to do with it. Even if he felt his relationship was secure, Lovino was still suspicious of this Matthew person. It had only been a week and a half since he joined the condo and already he seemed to be everyone's best friend. Feliciano even spoke highly of him even though they only met for a few hours.
So when Antonio asked if Lovino wanted to join them for Thanksgiving, he decided to go to conduct more investigation.
The only problem was that on Thanksgiving Saturday, a few of Lovino's restaurants wanted to stay open and Lovino promised he'd help out with one of them since he usually didn't celebrate the holiday. He knew that if he called La Torta ahead of time saying he had plans, they'd let him go (he was the boss after all) but he didn't like how

As soon as he gave him permission, Antonio started texting Lovino like crazy. Granted he respected Lovino's limits but any time he was away from work to just before he went to bed, Antonio was texting him.
Lovino soon learned that he absolutely despised texts. Call him old fashioned but he much preferred face to face interactions since there was much more emotion to it and a lot less emojis. And Antonio texted like a teenager, full of acronyms and abbreviations. What was worse is that he texted in Spanish. They had agreed since they both knew each other's languages well, Antonio could text in Spanish if Lovino could text in Italian. But as well as Lovino knew Spanish, he didn't know the abbreviations and often made Antonio rewrite his texts. Thank god for unlimited texting plans but in the end Lovino would've much preferred talking to him in person.
On top of all this, Antonio often texted about their new roommate, Matteo or something. He liked to talk about how shy he was and how cute

It wasn't until September that anything changed that year. Septembers put a lot of people in a bad mood because for many it was a new start for a lot of work and school as well as a reminder of disaster long ago but no one was more put off than Lovino. September 4th that year was the first anniversary of his grandfather's death and September 15th was the second anniversary of his miscarriage so when Antonio showed up on his doorstep September 20th, he was in no mood to entertain.
In fact, he slammed the door in his face as soon as he saw it was him.
"Bastard! I told you, you can't come over here any more!" he yelled through the door. He couldn't believe Antonio would show his face now. Even if they weren't together, he could've at least dropped a text on the fifteenth. "Go home!"
"But Lovi, I got a job!" Antonio lied.
Lovino hesitated. This would be the best news he'd had in months. "Really?" Lovino opened the door again and Antonio grabbed him into a hug.
"No, but I had to see you!" h

Lovino thought waiting would be easy but just knowing Antonio was so keen to fix their relationship made him even more willing to get back together. As the weeks went by waiting for the Spaniard to knock on his door with good news, Lovino had to practice a fair bit of self-restraint. Antonio often called just to talk but Lovino felt he could only hang up on him or else he feared asking him over or getting invited to Francis'. It was so hard because he felt so lonely in his big house with no one but Roma to be his companion. She was often a crappy companion too because she'd dig her claws into his knees if she laid on his lap and always liked to scratched the furniture. He thought of training her to be outdoor but he didn't trust the city streets and didn't want to be even more alone. Declawing was an option but scratching seemed to be her favourite pastime and he didn't want her to be just as miserable as himself.
Lovino thought waiting would be easy but Antonio thought the same about

September 4th, Romulus Vargas passed away.
The funeral took place a week later. In his will he requested a private funeral for only friends and family but that didn't stop people all over Europe passing by the cottage to offer condolences. Most were from associates of the Vargas company but many were also just people that had once known the kindness of the old man. Most didn't know of Folkert and Romulus's true relation and the elder Beilschmidt wished to let it remain that way. Lovino however thought it must've been very hard on him, acting like he was only there himself to pay a few respects to the deceased. Not that the young Italian felt any less pain. He felt like his entire life had come caving in on top of him.
Feliciano and Marina had been able to see Romulus before his passing but he hadn't held out much longer than that. Ludwig joined them later for the funeral as well as Francis, Antonio, Gilbert, Elizabeta, and Roderich. Despite Lovino's silent protest, they had all been li

Lovino and Antonio spent nearly a year and a half apart. They weren't necessarily the best of times. Since the pet store, Antonio hadn't been able to find a new job. He wasn't exactly looking very hard though; Francis kept him rather busy assigning him errands and chores to do when the Spaniard was looking for extra cash. This of course wasn't a significant income at all even if Francis was waiving his rent fees. For now though, he was managing better than before.
Lovino too felt like he was simply managing. His income was obviously better but he was working very hard and found little time to enjoy himself. The basics of his whole life was going to work, going home, and going to bed. He was doing better at work though and even gave Valentino a raise. It was simply home that left him feeling empty and depressed.
On occasion when Lovino was feeling terribly lonely, he visited his brother. Marina had grown to a waddling toddler of few words but her favourite when Lovino was around was 'zi

Christmas came around sooner than Lovino expected and he was stuck with a decision. He could stay and be with his friends and his family or he could go back to Italy and spend the holidays with his grandfather. Of course, Romulus insisted he stay but Lovino didn't know if he could handle being around everyone at once. Of course there was always the third option: staying home alone with his cat. That didn't sound like a Christmas to be proud of but the closer the day came, the more tempting it was.
A fourth option arose, however, out of the blue. It was his last day of work before he planned to take time off for the holidays and Valentino stopped by his office. The young man was all excited because Lovino had given him a full week's vacation since he wouldn't need him while vacationing himself. Lovino was packing up to leave when Valentino arrived.
"Signore! I'm glad I could catch you," Valentino said. "Um... I was wondering... I mean I'm sure you have plans. Actually, I probably

The days seemed to run into each other. It had been two weeks since Matthew first arrived in Germany. Katyusha and Elizabeta had shipped him some clothing, the package from Ukraine having not yet arrived. He was looking better every day and was gaining the weight he really needed. Arthur had come and put protection charms on Matthew, as well as the house, making it so the Canadian couldn't leave unless he had permission to do so. Matthew was in the room that Gilbert had given him, trying on one of the dresses shipped from Hungary to get used to the feeling.
"...ugh...it's for my own good...and it least they will fit and be comfortable..."
Gilbert knocked on the door and stepped in with Matthew's lunch. "Hey Mattie, lunch is re- Well now, lookit you," he grinned as he set the sandwich on the end table.
Matthew was in a blue and white sundress, thankfully without the original owner's fondness of ruffles, lest he have his own brother shoot him. Elizabeta was quite a bit taller than him, s

After setting everything down, Matthew went up to his room to change and got into some PJs. Once he came back down, he started up the fireplace and sat down on the couch, hugging himself. Groping around for the throw blanket, he wrapped it around him.
Alfred came down from his room, clad in a pair of PJ pants and his obnoxious hero T-shirt. It was baggy, so one would not be able to see the weight he'd gained. He walked up behind Matthew and dropped the towel he had been previously using to dry his hair with onto his brother's head.
"Hey!" Matthew squeaked, not expecting to be pulled from this daze. Realizing it was a towel, he began to dry his wavy hair, thanking Alfred as he did so. When he finished, he got up, put the towel in the hamper down the hall and went into the kitchen to put a kettle on the stove. He reached up on his tiptoes to get a few packets of hot cocoa out of the cupboard above his head.
Alfred stood behind Matthew, curiously looking over his shoulder and watching wha

Throughout the weeks after the miscarriage, Elizabeta called requesting a check-up for Lovino. Most of the time Lovino made some lame excuse so he wouldn't have to go but after a while, Elizabeta kept insisting and Lovino had very few excuse. It was perhaps a month and a half after the loss and Lovino finally took himself to the hospital. Arthur was on reception but he didn't make any small talk and just let him in. Lovino preferred it this way considering he didn't know what he'd talk about anyway.
A nurse took Lovino to Elizabeta's exam room to wait and then the doctor came in shortly after.
"Lovino, finally it seems," Elizabeta said. She held a small warm smile as if she was trying to comfort him and Lovino was already regretting coming. "So, how have you been?"
"I'm fine," Lovino said curtly.
Elizabeta nodded. "Alright, well... Have you had any health issues you'd like to discuss?"
Lovino shook his head. "No, I've been fine."
"Okay. Well you can understand why I insisted on seeing

Antonio visited every day but Lovino never let him stay past dinner. He didn't want to talk much, he didn't want to be intimate, he just thanked Antonio for coming over and made him go. After a while though, he didn't even want that anymore.
A week passed then Lovino invited Antonio over but didn't make dinner. Instead he just sat him down on the couch and took his armchair.
"Toni... I want to talk," Lovino said folding his hands together. "I don't think we can do this anymore."
Antonio blinked and stared at him. "...Do what?"
"...Us," Lovino ended up saying. "I... I love you but I don't know what to do in this relationship anymore... I think we should take a break."
Antonio's eyes went wide. "A break...? Lovi... You're breaking up with me?"
Lovino started tearing up but nodded to the floor. "I'm sorry, Toni... I really am. But... I don't think I'm the right person for you. You deserve better."
"No!" Antonio said. "No, Lovino you're the only person for me! I have never loved anyone mor

After a week in Italy, Romulus was feeling much better and insisted his grandchildren head home. Lovino was reluctant but he had work to get back to and he didn't put up too much of a fuss. He trusted Folkert to look after his grandfather for the time being and Romulus promised not to take strolls in the heat alone. Parting was hard but they had to leave.
When they got home, the first stop was Feliciano's to drop him off and pick up the kittens as they were babysat. Once they got through the door, Feliciano ran in to hug his husband.
"I missed you so much!" Feliciano said kissing his cheek. "Ti amo!"
"Ich liebe dich auch, Feli," Ludwig said rubbing his back. "How was your grandfather?"
"He's better I'd say. How was Marina? Did she behave?"
Ludwig nodded. "She missed you."
Feliciano pouted. "I missed her too. So so much. Is she awake?"
"No, I just got her to bed."
"Okay, I won't disturb her." Pasta mewled and nudged his leg. "Oh! Right, Lovi, you can have the kitties back.

They arrived at the hospital early the next morning and were let into Romulus's room without much fuss. The old Italian man was asleep then but he woke easily when he heard them come in.
"Nonno!" Feliciano ran to him and hugged him. Lovino just stood behind him trying to hold back tears. Their grandfather looked to be in a horrible shape. His age lines were deep and dark around his face and he looked terribly tired. They had him attached to IV and Feliciano had to be careful not to loosen anything.
"Miei nipoti..." Romulus said rubbing Feliciano's back. There was a hint of labour in his voice and his words rather slow. "I'm surprised to see you here all of a sudden. You aren't here because of my little fall?"
"No, we came for the welcoming hospital atmosphere... Of course we're here because of you!" Lovino snapped. "And this wasn't a little fall, Nonno! The doctor's said you had a stroke!"
"Lovino, calm down," Romulus said. "It'll take more than a little stroke to take out your

The flight to Italy was longer than Lovino could take. He was terribly worried about his grandfather and he couldn't make a single call or send a single text to see how he was doing. Folkert had been uncomfortably brief but Ludwig had assured the Italian brother's that it wasn't any kind of sign as it was his father's personality. All they knew was that Romulus had taken a fall out in his vineyard and was currently staying in a hospital.
Lovino had allowed Antonio to join him although the Italian was strongly against at first. Ludwig had wanted to come but someone had to stay home with Marina so it was just the Spaniard and the two brothers. Lovino didn't talk to either of them the entire trip and simply wanted time to be in his own head as he tried to cope with his stress. Feliciano and Antonio were both terribly worried about him but could say nothing about it.
By the time they got to Italy, it was rather late and everyone was tired from jet-lag. Folkert picked them up from the airpo

Lovino stared at the ceiling. His cheeks burned with dry tears and his throat hurt from yelling. It had been three hours now since the doctor had informed him of his miscarriage. He sensed Antonio beside him but he didn't dare look at him. He couldn't, it would only make things worse. He knew the Spaniard was beyond tears as well and things were sinking in for them both.
The baby was gone. No one knew why. The doctor suggested complications or poor development but Lovino felt responsible.
Maybe if he'd exercised more. Maybe if he'd eaten healthier. Maybe if he didn't overwork himself. Maybe if he had simply been more loving.
Maybe then the baby would be alive.
He heard the door open to his hospital room and closed his eyes, listening to the footsteps as a nurse came in to check on him. She checked his vitals; blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, so on. He participated silently, avoiding eye contact.
She took down a couple notes and spoke. She had a raspy little voice that annoyed h

When Lovino got off the phone with his grandfather, he felt a little guilty. It must've been very late in Italy and Romulus Vargas wasn't as young as he acted and he needed sleep. He was getting up there in age and Lovino always feared the worst whenever he heard him cough. This was partially why he rarely called, the other reason being he was usually very busy during the day. He wished he could talk more though because he felt like his grandfather was the only one who truly understood him. His parents died shortly after Feliciano's birth and his grandfather was the only one who could help him cope with the loss. Unfortunately, due to their death, Romulus was a very busy man trying to run the family business. Lovino started spending a lot of time in boarding school and began to resent his little brother for not being old enough and getting to stay home with Romulus. It wasn't long before he too was off to boarding school but to young Lovino, it just wasn't fair. Regardless, he still fe

A few weeks went by while Antonio was looking for work. He had sent out résumés to every possible place he could perform but he wasn't finding much luck. Lovino told him he needed to expand his search and not just look for guitar gigs. It wouldn't hurt to work an entry level job even but Antonio wasn't too keen on it. He wanted a job where he could express himself and his passions but being so picky offered him very few opportunities. He even asked Lovino if any of his restaurants were looking for live music but Lovino told him every time that there were no positions open.
Lovino himself wasn't doing too well either. Not with his job really but more personally. He was a lot more tired these days even though he noticed he'd sleep much longer than usual. He got dizzy easy too, often when he got up a little too fast or if he stood for too long. He considered seeing a doctor but he found himself too busy and it didn't seem like too much of a deal. That was until he couldn't keep

"...Gil?..." Matthew asked, feeling like the little bird was the harbinger to the end of the world. He was starting to shake like a leaf and very much wanted to run and hide. The blond sunk as far into the albino as he could.
Gilbert placed a hand on Matthew's arm and gently rubbed. "Calm down, Mattie. It's probably just a note to Toni and I telling us when we should get together next." Gilbert soothed, grabbing the note from the bird's leg and reading it. He immediately paled and glanced down at Matthew...shit...how the fuck did he know to look here?...
Matthew noticed the change in facial expression and bolted upright. "He knows I'm here, doesn't he?!" he said, voice losing all volume control in his fear.
Gilbert was broken out of his thoughts at Matthew's outburst. "W-Was? Ah, nein, nein! He's just wondering if I've seen you. He says he "woke up and you weren't there"." Gilbert hoped that would calm Matthew down, as little reassurance he knew it was.

That night, Lovino got home early and started dinner right away. For some reason he felt nervous about seeing Antonio even if they'd just hung out all day the day before. He made a pesto and baked some garlic bread then set the coffee table so they could eat on the couch. He would never usually allow this but he felt like he'd much prefer it tonight over sitting at the table.
Perhaps only a half hour after he'd finished setting up, Antonio showed up. He was wearing a loose casual suit and some black shiny shoes and his brown waves of hair had been gelled out of his face. Lovino paused for a moment, taking in how handsome he looked.
"You look like a monkey," Lovino said turning and going back into the house.
Antonio chuckled. "Really? I thought I looked nice."
"What's it all for anyway?"
"I've been handing out résumés all day and Francis thought I should look better in case anyone did an on the spot interview. I didn't know that was a thing..."

Gilbert woke up a couple hours later, yawning and rubbing the sleep away from his tired eyes...man, what a day yesterday...He looked down at Matthew, who was still in his arms, and smiled upon seeing his peaceful face. "Well, you look a little better."
Matthew squirmed a bit, not fully asleep at that point. "...I feel a little better too..." the blond said, voice not accustomed to speech just yet.
Gilbert jumped at the sound of Matthew's voice. "Mattie! I didn't know you were up! You know, it's not awesome to scare the awesome me. Not that I was scared! Because I'm too awesome for that!" Gilbert's hand almost met his face. "I'm glad you're feeling better though." Sitting up and stretching, the German's face and tone became serious. He began to fidget with his hands.
